The Perch from the River Rhine, c. 1739 by Eleazar Albin depicts a river perch with striped olive-green flanks and vivid red-orange fins, set against finely ruled lines of water beneath a soft, pale sky. Eleazar Albin (English, c.1680–1741/42) was one of the earliest English natural history illustrators, best known for his studies of insects, spiders, and songbirds.
Artist: Eleazar Albin (English, c.1680–1741/42). Date: c. 1739 (inscribed “Eleaz. Albin del: May 1. 1739”; the plate was published after his death in editions of Roger North’s essay on fish and fish-ponds, including The History of Esculent Fish, 1794).
