The Garden of Saint Paul’s Hospital (La Chute des Feuilles), painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, depicts the walled garden of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in autumn, its trees rendered in glowing ochre and gold as a lone figure walks along a sunlit path past an empty stone bench. Van Gogh painted this canvas, which he called simply a leaf-fall, during his year of voluntary confinement at the asylum, finding in the enclosed grounds an inexhaustible subject for close observation. The swirling, wind-blown brushwork and warm autumnal palette convey both the melancholy and the quiet beauty he found within the hospital walls.
