Piles of French Novels (Romans Parisiens), painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, depicts an extravagant stack of contemporary paperback novels, most bound in the bright yellow covers used by Parisian publishers of the day, arranged on a tabletop beside a glass holding a single rose. Painted during his two years in Paris, the still life reflects Van Gogh’s immersion in the city’s literary culture and his growing command of Impressionist colour and flattened, decorative composition. Both an ode to modern French literature and a showcase of his developing style, it stands among the boldest and most graphically striking still lifes of his Paris period.

Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1887.

A note on this reproduction: this print renders the background wall stripes in cooler, pastel yellow/green/pink tones. A warmer, more saturated orange/rust-toned reproduction of this same painting is also available in our collection.
