The Vicarage at Nuenen, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1885, depicts the modest brick parsonage in the Brabant village of Nuenen where his parents lived and where Van Gogh himself resided from December 1883 to November 1885, rendered in the dark, earthy palette and direct, unidealized handling that defined his early Dutch period. Framed by bare autumn trees and painted with close, concentrated observation, the house held deep personal significance as the family home during one of the most formative and turbulent periods of his development as an artist. The painting predates the transformative influence of Parisian colour and Japanese prints that would later reshape his style.
