The Outskirts of Paris, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1886 depicts a quiet stretch of open land at the edge of the city, where a lone gas lamp, a handful of figures, and scattered rooftops meet beneath a wide, overcast sky. Painted soon after his arrival in the French capital, the muted grays and browns still carry traces of his darker Dutch palette, even as the loose, broken brushwork shows him absorbing new ideas from the Parisian avant-garde. It is an early record of the transitional landscape between city and countryside that fascinated van Gogh throughout his two years in Paris.
