The Outer Harbour at Zaandam (De Voorzaan), painted by Claude Monet in 1871 looks across the broad, pale waters of the Voorzaan, where dark sailing barges drift before a low shoreline of windmills, timber yards and small houses. A vast overcast sky fills most of the canvas, its silvery grays mirrored in the calm harbour so that water and air nearly merge. Monet painted it during his four-month stay in Zaandam in the summer and autumn of 1871, when the windmills and waterways of Holland yielded some two dozen canvases on his journey home after the Franco-Prussian War.
