The Olive Trees (Les Oliviers), painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, depicts a grove of gnarled, twisting olive trees beneath a turbulent sky of pale swirling clouds and jagged violet-blue mountains near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Van Gogh created this canvas while a patient at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, working alongside The Starry Night as a daylight counterpart to that famous nocturne. The rhythmic, undulating brushstrokes animate both earth and sky, transforming an ordinary Provençal landscape into a vision charged with restless emotional energy.
