The Olive Pickers, Saint-Rémy, painted by Vincent van Gogh in December 1889 shows figures gathering olives beneath the gnarled trees of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole grounds, one of three large compositions van Gogh painted on the theme within weeks of one another. The agitated, swirling paint surface and deep greens, blues, and ochres charge the scene with a visionary intensity far beyond simple agricultural record-keeping. Van Gogh described wanting to paint “the olive picking as it’s still seen today,” giving the ancient labor a quietly symbolic weight.
