Painted in December 1889 at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, Vincent van Gogh's The Olive Pickers presents a group of figures harvesting olives from the gnarled, ancient trees that fascinated him throughout his Provençal period. The swirling, agitated paint surface and deep, resonant palette — greens, blues, and ochres — charge the agricultural scene with an almost visionary intensity. One of three large olive-picking compositions painted simultaneously, and among the most powerful figure works of his asylum period.
