Women Picking Olives, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, depicts two women gathering olives beneath the gnarled, silvery trees of a Provençal grove, the figures set within swirling brushwork of golden ochre and warm green that bathes the scene in late-autumn light. Van Gogh painted three versions of this composition in December 1889 during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, part of his celebrated series of olive grove paintings from that year. The inclusion of the harvesting figures gives this version a rare narrative warmth within his otherwise solitary landscape work.
