The Night Café (Le Café de nuit), 1888 by Vincent van Gogh

The Night Café, painted by Vincent van Gogh in September 1888, depicts the interior of the Café de la Gare in Arles, its clashing reds and greens, acid yellow gas lamps, and distorted floorboards evoking what Van Gogh himself called the terrible passions of humanity. A billiard table looms empty at the center of the room while a handful of solitary figures slump at tables along the walls, watched over by the proprietor near the doorway. Painted in a single sleepless night, it stands among the most psychologically intense interiors of his Arles period.

A note on this reproduction: this print renders in a softer, muted palette, with a muddier orange-brown floor and flatter green ceiling. A more vividly contrasted reproduction of this same painting is also available in our collection.
