Painted over three nights in September 1888 in Arles, Vincent van Gogh's The Night Café is one of the most psychologically intense interiors in the history of Western painting. The violent colour contrasts — clashing reds and greens, acid yellows — deliberately evoke, in van Gogh's own words, the terrible passions of humanity. The crude perspective, the solitary figures slumped at tables, and the billiard table looming at the centre create an atmosphere of oppressive, sleepless tension. A masterwork of expressive colour and one of the defining images of Post-Impressionism.
