The Night Café, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888 depicts the interior of the Café de la Gare in Arles, where Van Gogh lodged above the billiard hall during the late summer of that year. Rendered in clashing reds and greens under the acid glow of gas lamps, the composition was, in the artist’s own words, an attempt to express the terrible passions of humanity through color alone. Painted over three sleepless nights, it remains one of the most psychologically charged interiors in Post-Impressionist painting.
Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1888.

A note on this reproduction: this print renders the famous red/green color clash at full intensity, with a vivid yellow-green floor and teal ceiling. A softer-toned reproduction of this same painting is also available in our collection.
