The Mosque, Arab Festival, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1881, captures a swirling crowd gathered before a domed mosque, its white facade vibrating under brilliant North African sunlight. Painted during Renoir’s trip to Algeria, the canvas unfolds in chalk white, scarlet, and deep azure tones, animated by the rapid, broken touch he used to record the dust, light, and movement of the festival. The journey was partly an homage to Delacroix, whose Orientalist work Renoir revered, and produced some of his most exuberant outdoor scenes.
