Painted in 1881 during Renoir's Algerian sojourn, The Mosque (Arab Festival) (La Mosquée, Fê̂te arabe) captures a swirling crowd massed before a domed mosque, the white facade vibrating in brilliant North African sunlight. The composition unfolds in chalk white, scarlet, ochre, and deep azure tones, animated by the rapid, broken touch Renoir used to record the dust, light, and movement of the festival. The trip to Algeria — partly an homage to Delacroix, whose Orientalist work Renoir revered — produced some of his most exuberant outdoor scenes. The work hangs today at the Musée d'Orsay and stands as a luminous testament to the encounter between French Impressionism and the colors of the Maghreb.
