The Mill at Vervy (Le Moulin de Vervy), painted by Claude Monet around 1889 looks down on a small white watermill with russet roofs beside the waters of the Creuse, where a low weir breaks the river into ribbons of silver foam. Above the buildings a steep hillside of bare winter scrub rises in tones of violet and mauve beneath a pale overcast sky, closing the lonely valley in on itself. Monet painted the scene during his demanding 1889 campaign at Fresselines in the Creuse valley, a group of some two dozen canvases whose brooding light marked a decisive step toward his later series painting.
