The Magpie (La Pie), painted by Claude Monet in the winter of 1868-1869 shows a solitary black magpie perched on a wattle gate in a snow-covered field near Étretat in Normandy, where low winter sunlight casts delicate blue shadows across the fresh snow. It is one of the largest and most ambitious of Monet's early snow scenes, its radical use of colored shadow so unconventional that the jury rejected the canvas from the 1869 Paris Salon. Today the painting hangs in the Musée d'Orsay, where it ranks among the best-loved works in the collection.

Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1868-1869.
