The Luncheon: Monet’s Garden at Argenteuil (Le Déjeuner, panneau décoratif), painted by Claude Monet around 1873 presents the aftermath of a summer meal in the painter’s first garden at Argenteuil, the abandoned table still set with a gleaming coffee pot, cups and fruit. In the dappled shade his son Jean plays beside a bench with a hat hanging above him, while a woman in white pauses among beds of brilliant red geraniums on her way to the house. Conceived as a large decorative panel and shown at the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876, the canvas is today one of the treasures of the Musée d’Orsay.
