The Luncheon (Le Déjeuner), 1875 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Choose options
The Luncheon, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1875, gathers a couple around a sunlit café table strewn with glassware and a loaf of bread, an intimate forerunner to the grand Luncheon of the Boating Party that followed several years later. The loose, sparkling brushwork defines Renoir’s mid-1870s manner, by which point he had begun perfecting his treatment of bourgeois leisure among cafés, terraces, and outdoor gatherings. The work remains one of the most beloved depictions of the modern gathering at table in nineteenth-century French painting, held today at the Barnes Foundation.
