The Lighthouse of the Hospice, Honfleur (Le Phare de l’Hospice), painted by Claude Monet in 1864 looks across the glistening tidal flats of the Seine estuary toward the slender white lighthouse at the foot of the Côte de Grâce. A rowing boat and a scattering of small sailboats drift beneath an immense sky of silvery clouds that fills more than half the canvas. One of Monet’s earliest marine paintings, made at age 24 while he worked beside Boudin and Jongkind on the Normandy coast, it already reveals his lifelong fascination with water, weather and shifting light.

Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1864.
