The Letter, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in c. 1895-1900 captures two young women absorbed in the intimate ritual of correspondence: one leans over a writing table in a rose-colored dress, pen in hand, while her companion in an ornate flowered hat looks on. Rendered in warm rose, soft cream, and golden ochre tones with the velvety, fused brushwork of Renoir's mature figural manner, the painting belongs to a body of quiet domestic-interior scenes that occupied Renoir through the late 1890s, when he turned from the public leisure subjects of his Impressionist youth toward the private world of women reading, sewing, and writing. Now held at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, it remains one of the most tender expressions of his late maturity.
