Painted in November 1889 at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Vincent van Gogh's The Large Plane Trees (Road Menders at Saint-Rémy) presents a group of workers repairing a road beneath towering plane trees, their golden autumn foliage blazing against the blue sky. The powerful contrast of warm and cool tones, the dynamic swirling impasto, and the monumental vertical presence of the trees make this one of the most visually spectacular and compositionally ambitious works of his asylum period. Held in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
