The Large Plane Trees, painted by Vincent van Gogh in November 1889, depicts a team of road menders repairing a street beneath towering, gnarled plane trees near the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum at Saint-Rémy, their thick trunks rendered in sweeping, sculptural brushwork against a backdrop of golden autumn foliage. Tiny figures work at the base of the trees and along the road, dwarfed by the monumental scale of the trunks. Painted during a period of intense creative energy near the end of his stay at Saint-Rémy, it is among the most structurally ambitious landscapes of his career.
