The Langlois Bridge, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, depicts one of the wooden drawbridges spanning the canal outside Arles, its angular timber framework reflected in the still, pale green water beneath an overcast grey sky, with small figures crossing along the towpath. Drawn to the bridge’s resemblance to the canals of his native Netherlands and its echoes of Japanese woodblock prints, Van Gogh painted the subject several times during his first months in Provence, capturing it in a different light and mood each time.
