The Jockeys, by Edgar Degas presents a tightly cropped view of riders seen from behind, their brightly colored silks set against a horse's head that fills the right side of the canvas. The unconventional framing, influenced by photography and Japanese prints, pulls the viewer directly into the crowd of horses rather than observing the race from a distance, a device Degas favored throughout his racetrack scenes.
Artist: Edgar Degas (1834-1917). Date: c. 1882.
