The Japanese Footbridge (Le Pont japonais), painted by Claude Monet in 1899 arches a gentle blue-green bridge across the lily pond of his garden at Giverny, where clusters of water lilies drift over still water beneath a screen of willows and reeds. Dense greenery presses in from every side, dissolving the horizon into a shimmering tapestry of foliage and reflection. Painted at the height of Monet’s Giverny years, it opens the celebrated series that would occupy him for the rest of his life.
