The Island of La Grande Jatte (L’Île de la Grande Jatte), painted by Claude Monet in 1878 follows a shaded footpath along the Seine, where strollers pause beneath wind ruffled trees to watch the water slip past distant poplars and red roofed houses. Monet renders the island’s leafy bank in quick strokes of green, cream and earthy brown beneath a sky of tumbling summer clouds. He painted the canvas during a brief spell living in Paris, shortly before his move to Vétheuil and six years before Seurat made the same island famous.
