The Houses of Parliament, Sun Breaking Through the Fog (Londres, le Parlement, trouée de soleil dans le brouillard), painted by Claude Monet in 1904 dissolves the Gothic towers of Westminster into a ghostly blue-violet silhouette rising from the Thames. A low sun pierces the famous London fog, scattering flecks of orange and rose across the shimmering water while sky and river melt into a single veil of mauve. Part of the great London series Monet began from his window at the Savoy and finished from memory at Giverny, the painting entered the Musée d’Orsay with the Camondo bequest.
