The Houses of Parliament, Effect of Fog (Le Parlement, effet de brouillard), painted by Claude Monet in 1903-04 shows the Gothic towers of the Palace of Westminster rising as a dark silhouette against a luminous orange sky, the glow of the sun breaking faintly through dense London fog. Below, the Thames dissolves into hazy blue-violet reflections, with small boats barely visible on its surface. The canvas belongs to Monet's celebrated series of nearly one hundred views of the river painted from his window at the Savoy Hotel, where he returned repeatedly between 1899 and 1904 to capture how fog and light transformed the same skyline.
