The Hill of Montmartre with Stone Quarry, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1886 captures the still semi-rural fringe of Montmartre near the Paris apartment Van Gogh shared with his brother Theo, with windmills crowning the hill above an open stone quarry and scattered timber. Painted shortly after his move to Paris, the work shows a rapidly brightening palette and looser, more fluid brushwork as he absorbed the lessons of the Impressionists working around him. An important transitional landscape from the year that reshaped his artistic direction.
