The Heights of Trouville (Les Hauteurs de Trouville), 1885 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Choose options
The Heights of Trouville, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1885 looks down from the grassy dunes above the fashionable Normandy resort toward its rooftops, church spires, and the broad estuary of the Touques opening onto the sea. Painted during a summer stay with his patron Paul Berard near Dieppe, Renoir joined a tradition of coastal views at Trouville and neighboring Deauville first explored by Boudin and Monet, rendering the scene in cool blues, fresh greens, and warm ivory tones. The work dates from a transitional moment in Renoir's career, as his rapid Impressionist brushwork began giving way to the firmer, more classically structured compositions of his so-called Ingres period.
