Wheat Field with a Reaper, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889 shows a solitary reaper cutting through a vast, golden wheat field beneath a blazing yellow sun, the walled field and distant blue mountains of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence visible from the window of his room at the asylum. Van Gogh built the composition from thick, churning strokes of yellow paint, with the reaper picked out in only a few touches of blue against the glowing grain. He described the reaper as an image of death cutting down humanity like wheat, yet insisted the scene was almost smiling, bathed in a light of fine gold rather than sorrow.
