Painted in June 1888 during his extraordinary summer in Arles, Vincent van Gogh's The Harvest presents the vast, sun-baked plain of La Crau stretching to the horizon, the harvested wheat fields and farm buildings rendered in a radiant palette of gold, blue, and ochre with the panoramic confidence and chromatic intensity of his most productive Provençal period. The work is one of a celebrated group of harvest paintings from this summer in which Van Gogh captured the agricultural landscape of the Camargue with a breadth and luminosity that recalls the great Dutch landscape tradition while being entirely his own. Now held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, it is among the most expansive and joyfully luminous of all his Arles works. A gloriously sunlit and richly decorative work for any interior drawn to the heights of Post-Impressionism.
