The Gust of Wind, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in c. 1872 captures a windswept hillside near Saint-Cloud, west of Paris, where grasses and trees bend beneath a turbulent silver-blue sky, animated by rapid, broken brushwork in fresh greens, cool blues, and warm ivory. Painted in the years just before the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, the work belongs to a small group of pure landscapes in which Renoir, working alongside Monet, set out to register sensation itself: the felt pressure of moving air rendered directly in paint. The painting today hangs at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, a touchstone of early Impressionism's pursuit of fleeting natural effects.
