Painted around 1872 during Renoir's emerging Impressionist years, The Gust of Wind (Le Coup de Vent) captures a windswept hillside where grasses and trees bend in a single sweeping current of air beneath a turbulent silver-blue sky. The composition unfolds in fresh greens, cool blues, and warm ivory tones, animated by the rapid, broken brushwork Renoir was developing alongside Monet in the years just before the first Impressionist exhibition. The painting belongs to a small group of pure landscapes in which Renoir set out to register sensation itself — the feel of moving wind rendered in pure paint. The work hangs today at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and stands as a luminous testament to early Impressionism's pursuit of fleeting natural effects.
