The Glade, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1895 opens onto a sun-dappled forest clearing where two small figures pause on a grassy path beneath tall, slender trees, bright meadow grasses meeting the dense shade of the surrounding wood. Rendered in vibrant greens, golden ochre, and warm cream tones with the velvety, fused brushwork of his mature manner, the painting reflects Renoir's return to landscape in the 1890s after years devoted to classical figure painting, often working in the woods around Essoyes and the Ile-de-France. The canvas is held today at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, a quiet late-career testament to the woodland subjects he loved.
