The Gare Saint-Lazare (La Gare Saint-Lazare), painted by Claude Monet in 1877 looks down the tracks beneath the great iron and glass canopy of Paris’s busiest railway station, where a dark locomotive advances through billowing clouds of blue and white steam. Sunlight filters through the vapor onto the platforms, dissolving the apartment blocks beyond into a golden haze. One of twelve views of the station Monet painted that year, several of which hung in the third Impressionist exhibition of 1877, the canvas is now in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
