The Gare Saint-Lazare (La Gare Saint-Lazare), painted by Claude Monet in 1877 captures the great iron and glass train shed of Paris’s busiest railway station, where dark locomotives send up clouds of white steam beneath the soaring roof as passengers gather along the platforms. Beyond the shed, daylight falls on the pale apartment blocks of the Pont de l’Europe district, setting modern machinery against the bright facades of the city. Monet painted the station on site in early 1877, and this canvas belongs to his celebrated series of a dozen views that made the steam age a true subject of Impressionism.

Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1877.
