The Gare Saint-Lazare, Arrival of a Train (Gare Saint-Lazare, l’Arrivée d’un Train), painted by Claude Monet in 1877 captures locomotives billowing steam and smoke beneath the iron-and-glass canopy of the Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris’s busy railway terminus. Shafts of hazy light filter through the smoke-filled shed, blurring the silhouettes of trains, tracks and passing figures into a shimmering study of industrial atmosphere. One of eight views of the station Monet exhibited at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877, the painting marked his final sustained exploration of urban subject matter before he turned chiefly to landscape.
