The Garden of St. Paul’s Hospital at St-Rémy, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, depicts the enclosed grounds of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum where the artist spent a year of his convalescence, its gnarled pine trees and dense undergrowth rendered in restless, swirling brushwork beneath a pale evening sky. Two tiny figures move along a garden path, dwarfed by the tangled roots and branches that dominate the composition. Painted during a period of intense productivity between attacks of illness, the work reflects Van Gogh’s determination to keep observing and painting nature even within the confines of the asylum grounds.
