Painted in 1889 during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, Vincent van Gogh's The Garden of St. Paul's Hospital at St-Rémy captures the enclosed garden of the asylum — a space of personal refuge and intense botanical observation for van Gogh during his convalescence. The swirling, animated foliage, the archway framing a glimpse of sky, and the richly saturated greens and yellows give the intimate scene an almost hallucinatory vividness. One of the most tender and botanically attentive works of his Saint-Rémy period.
