The Garden at Arles: Detail of the Cypress Trees, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888 isolates the towering dark cypresses and sun-warmed flowerbeds from the artist’s larger Arles garden composition, their thick dabs of blue-black paint rising against a pale mint sky. Loose strokes of yellow, white, and coral describe a tangle of late-summer blooms in the foreground, while the cypresses themselves anticipate the more famous flame-like trees Van Gogh would paint the following year at Saint-Rémy. This close, textured view captures the intensity of color and brushwork he was developing during his first months in the South of France.
