The Garden at Arles, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888 follows a sandy path as it curves between dense flowerbeds of red, blue, and yellow blossoms toward a distant white house and a row of dark cypresses on the horizon. Van Gogh worked the canvas in quick, directional strokes that give the foliage a restless, weather-blown energy, while the pale green sky lends the whole scene a soft, luminous calm. Painted during his first productive summer in Arles, the picture reflects his growing fascination with the flowering gardens and orchards of Provence.
