The Farm in Summer, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890 shows a weathered white farmhouse with a thick, mossy thatched roof rising above two small figures going about their daily chores in the yard below. Van Gogh rendered the crumbling walls and heavy roofline in loose, confident strokes of white and gray, set against a lush green field flecked with wildflowers. Painted during his final months in Auvers-sur-Oise, the picture reflects the artist’s fascination with the old thatched farm buildings he found there, which he described in letters to his brother Theo as remarkable and increasingly rare.
