The Factory at Asnières, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, depicts a glass factory in the industrial Paris suburb of Asnières, its worn pathway lined with rounded glass forms awaiting the furnace beside low workshop buildings, a red-roofed shed, and a lone chimney trailing smoke into a pale green sky. Van Gogh built the sky and rooftops from short, dashed strokes that echo the divisionist experiments of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac then current in Paris, while keeping the emotional directness that was entirely his own. An unusual and historically resonant subject within a body of work otherwise dominated by rural landscapes.
