The Equatorial Jungle, by Henri Rousseau is a dense, imagined tropical scene in which spiked agave leaves, pale pink lotus blossoms, and a towering white flower spike frame two monkeys peering out from the undergrowth. Rousseau, a self-taught French Post-Impressionist known as “Le Douanier,” painted this fantastical jungle entirely from his imagination and visits to the Paris botanical gardens, having never traveled outside France.
Artist: Henri Rousseau (1844–1910). Date: 1909.
