Bend in the Epte River near Giverny, painted by Claude Monet in 1888 follows a quiet curve of the little Epte as it slips past a dense screen of sunlit poplars and willows, their shimmering green and violet foliage nearly filling the canvas. Only a sliver of pale blue sky and the still water in the lower corner interrupt the flickering mass of leaves, each rendered in short, broken touches of color. Painted in the fields around his new home at Giverny, the canvas anticipates the poplar series Monet would devote to this same river a few years later.
