The Drinkers, after Daumier, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, is a free reinterpretation of a wood engraving by Honoré Daumier, transformed through Van Gogh's expressive color and swirling brushwork into a bold study of three men and a boy drinking at a tavern table. Painted at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the work belongs to a small group of copies Van Gogh made after admired artists during his hospitalization, using another's composition as a point of departure for his own vivid, hallucinatory palette of greens and blues.
