The Doge’s Palace Seen from San Giorgio Maggiore (Le Palais ducal vu de Saint-Georges Majeur), painted by Claude Monet in 1908 shows Venice’s most famous landmark dissolving into shimmering lagoon light, its pink and gold facade hovering between a pale sky and rippling blue water. A dark wedge of San Giorgio Maggiore’s waterfront anchors the foreground and pushes the palace and the neighboring rooftops into a luminous haze of lavender, rose and gold. Painted during Monet’s only campaign in Venice in the autumn of 1908, the canvas belongs to the celebrated late series in which the Impressionist master treated the city’s architecture as a study of pure light on water.
