The Doge’s Palace in Venice (Le Palais ducal), painted by Claude Monet in 1908 views the great Gothic facade of the Palazzo Ducale from across the lagoon, its pink and white marble dissolving into strokes of lilac, violet and gold beneath a hazy sky. The water of the basin fills the lower half of the canvas, carrying broken yellow and green reflections of the arcades toward the viewer. Painted during Monet’s only stay in Venice in the autumn of 1908, it belongs to the luminous late series that closed his career as a painter of cities.
