The Diggers, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, was created at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, where the composition reinterprets Jean-François Millet’s peasant laborers, showing two men bent over their spades turning the earth. One of more than twenty free copies Van Gogh made after Millet during his confinement, the painting channels his admiration for the dignity of rural labor through bold outlines and a muted palette of blues and browns.
