The Departure of the Boats, Étretat (Le Départ des bateaux, Étretat), painted by Claude Monet in 1885 looks down from the village onto the shingle beach as a fleet of brown-sailed fishing boats scatters across a startling turquoise sea. In the foreground stand the caloges, the old tarred hulls roofed with thatch that the fishermen of Étretat used as sheds, while villagers gather at the shoreline to watch the departure. Monet painted the scene during his autumn 1885 stay on the Normandy coast, and the canvas now hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago.
