The Dam at Zaandam, Evening (Le Dam à Zaandam, le soir), painted by Claude Monet in 1871 captures the quiet Dutch waterfront at dusk, where gabled houses with green shuttered windows line the quay and the bare masts of moored sailing barges rise against a cloud streaked twilight sky. The still water of the harbor mirrors buildings, boats and fading light in broken strokes of gray, green and violet. Monet spent the summer of 1871 in Zaandam after his wartime refuge in London, and the roughly two dozen canvases he painted there mark a decisive step toward the mature Impressionism he would unveil at Argenteuil.
