The Customs Hut, Morning (La Cabane du douanier, effet du matin), painted by Claude Monet in 1882 depicts the small stone customs officer’s cabin perched on the flowering cliffs of the Normandy coast, gulls wheeling above a pale green sea flecked with whitecaps. Morning light washes the scene in soft silvery tones as the tide draws back to reveal sand and dark rocks at the foot of the bluff. Monet discovered the abandoned hut near Pourville during his 1882 campaign on the Channel coast and returned to it again and again, making it the subject of more than a dozen canvases in changing light and weather.
