The Customs House, Pink Effect (La Maison du Douanier, effet rose), painted by Claude Monet in 1897 shows the small stone coastguard cabin at Petit Ailly perched on a grassy clifftop above the Channel, a lone white sail drifting on the pale water beyond. Sky and sea dissolve into a single veil of cream and soft yellow-green, while the hut’s masonry, touched with peach and rose, glows softly against the green turf. Monet first painted this cabin near Varengeville in 1882 and returned in 1896 and 1897 to study the same motif through a celebrated series of shifting atmospheric effects.
