The Coliseum, by James Merigot presents a hand-colored view of Rome's ancient amphitheater in ruin, its collapsed outer wall and overgrown arcades captured with careful architectural detail, with local figures and an ox-cart passing before its ancient walls. Merigot (1760-1824) was a French-born engraver and publisher active in London, best known for A Select Collection of Views and Ruins in Rome and its Vicinity, from which this plate is drawn.
Artist: James Merigot (1760-1824). Date: 1796-1798 (published 1815).
